The National Federation of Fish Friers, which is the Industry’s representative body, has come out strongly to discount predictions made recently that, due to the proposed ban on fishing for cod in the North Sea and the Irish Sea, we will see the end of Britain’s traditional fish and chips.

They point out that a significant percentage of fish used in the trade comes from sustainable stocks imported in frozen at sea and fresh form from countries such as Norway, Iceland, Faroe, Germany and Russia and not the North or Irish Seas.

NFFF General Secretary, Mrs Ann Kirk, said that the frying sector is deeply appreciative of the difficulties facing fishermen who have traditionally made a living fishing these waters, also the many thousands who work in the support industries. It is important that fish friers maintain viability in order that there is a demand for British caught fish when stocks recover.

She went on to say "We can guarantee to our loyal customers that, far from disappearing, cod and chips and haddock and chips will still provide a nourishing affordable meal for years to come."
