(L-R) Mark Drummond and Denise Dodd of the NFFF, winner Craig Buckley and Briar Wilkinson and Kelvin Lee of Drywite
Craig Buckley from Crewe Fish Bar has been crowned Young Fish Frier of the Year at the 23rd annual National Fish & Chip Awards. The announcement was made at a ceremony in London on Thursday 20 January 2011, hosted by food critic, Jay Rayner.
Young Fish Frier of the Year category, organised and managed by Drywite and the NFFF, offers young friers the chance to showcase their skills and background knowledge in all aspects of fish frying, plus their ability to run a successful business. Craig battered off competition from four other young fish friers from across the UK to scoop the prestigious accolade.
Passionate
Craig, aged 24, left school with A levels in Business Studies, Law and Economics and could have gone to University. Instead he took a job working at an Estate Agents while working part time in a friend’s fish and chip shop. He enjoyed working at the shop and realised it could hold potential as a lucrative and interesting career. Craig has owned and managed Crewe Fish Bar for 12 months. He’s passionate about the industry and would consider winning this award a huge honour. Craig has also invested in property and plans to expand his fish and chip business.
Highest quality food and service
Andy Gray, Customer Development Manager for Seafish commented: "Craig’s achievements are highly impressive and the contest for top place was closely run thanks to the high calibre of each of the shortlisted contenders. The UK’s fish and chip shops continue to deliver the highest quality food and service and each of the shortlisted young friers should be very proud of their achievements in the competition.”
Briar Wilkinson, Sales & Marketing Director of Drywite, said: "The competition to find the Young Fish Frier of the Year offered young fish friers the chance to showcase their skills and background knowledge in all aspects of fish frying, plus their ability to run a successful business. The applicants needed to demonstrate a positive attitude together with confidence in their own abilities. The competition started in 1965 and every winner has become nationally known through the publicity the competition creates. We are delighted that The Malcolm Lee Trophy has, this year, been presented to Craig Buckley of Crewe Fish Bar as part of The National Fish & Chip Awards 2011."
