National Winner - 2005 Regional Winner - NW England
Hodgsons Chippy, Lancaster is a small busy takeaway shop possessing a traditional stone exterior. The exterior is of a very smart and well presented nature. The shop is situated on a busy side street of terraced houses. Located opposite the shop is a corner shop/newsagent and there are a further two retail shops situated on either side of Hodgsons. The shop is close to both a school and a college.
The facia of the shop is very much in keeping with the surroundings and has a colour scheme of green and stone. |

Regional Winner - Midlands
Andy’s Fish Bar, Swadlincote, Derbyshire is a take-away shop located on a main road in the small Derbyshire town of Swadlincote and is run by a husband and wife team of Mr and Mrs Constantinou.
The shop was refurbished in January 2005. Adequate kerb side customer parking is available adjacent to the shop. The shop possesses an extremely modern look and feel, from the exterior of the premises right through to the rear preparation areas. Next door to the shop is located a Chinese meals take-away outlet, while opposite the shop is an of trees leading to a local park.
Bold, clear signage catches the eye of customers. The shop possesses a relatively large glass frontage, with a glass door entrance.
The shop menu is clearly seen from the outside of the shop. Shop opening hours are also clearly detailed. The shop is open six days a week: closed on Sundays. The shop is a current holder of the Seafish Friers Quality Award. |
Regional Winner - Eastern England
Linford’s Traditional Fish & Chips is a medium sized take-away shop, located in the town of Market Deeping. The shop has a small, very traditional looking frontage, which has a ‘cottage’ design and uses floral hanging baskets to compliment the dark wood of the windows.
Short-term car parking is available across the road from the shop and there is parking space for a couple of cars directly in front of the premises.
Fish and chips account for a claimed 67% if the total business. The shop is a current holder of the Seafish Friers Quality Award.eafish Friers Quality Award. |

Regional Winner -London & South East
McDermotts’s, Addington, Croydon is a small takeaway shop with a large 50 seater restaurant located alongside. The business is situated with a small shopping complex, containing a post office, small supermarket, video rental shop, dry cleaners, pub & restaurant and a number of other small retail outlets. The complex is well served by adjacent free parking spaces. One of the adjoining premises to McDermott’s is currently empty.
McDermott’s have recently agreed the use of this vacant unit and will undertake a complete refurbishment to enlarge the restaurant area and relocate the takeaway to the new unit. The shop is in excellent repair and very well maintained. |
Regional Winner - Wales
Andrew’s Fish Bar, Welshpool, North Wales is a large corner shop situated on the main high street running through the town of Welshpool in North Wales.
The shop has been in the family for many years. The external colour scheme is of predominantly white walls with blue paintwork and has a very distinctive wave design on the side wall, which makes it very easy to locate. Two benches are placed outside for customer use and there is adequate customer car parking on surrounding streets.
The signage is clear and the shop exterior is in keeping with the town’s character. There are extra menu boards outside to advertise current special offers. The Seafish Friers Quality Award logo is prominently displayed. |

Regional Winner -South West England
Harlees Fish & Chips, Verwood is a family run, large take-away shop located in the small town of Verwood in Dorset. The shop is owned and run by Richard Long, who also owns and runs a further three shops in the region. The shop stands on its own and is situated just off a roundabout and possesses excellent private customer car parking provision. There are no other shops in the near area, although there is a small Morrison’s supermarket a short distance beyond the roundabout.
There are a number of residential houses in the vicinity. The shop exterior has a maroon colour scheme and an extensive glass frontage with bold gold signage. To the left there is a double glass door entrance, and on the far right there is a single glass door entrance.
Shop opening hours are clearly detailed on the doors and the Seafish Friers Quality Award roundel is well positioned on the right hand side door. The shop is open seven days a week. Potted plants decorate the entrance. Overall the shop possesses an attractive fresh, bright, eye-catching exterior. An additional banner sign has been added to the shop exterior, proclaiming the shop as a regional winner in the 2005 Competition.
During 2005 the shop celebrated its tenth anniversary. Sales of fish and chips account for some 75% of the business turnover. |
Regional Winner - Scotland
Land & Sea Fish & Chips, Polmont is a corner take-away shop located on a main road in the Central Scotland town of Polmont. The shop has plenty of car parking provision outside and to the rear of the premises. It is owned and run by Susan Ord who is supported by a team of time served staff members.
The shop has a bright, eye-catching frontage (glass, black and chrome colour scheme), and there is prominent attractive signage.
The current Seafish Quality Award logo and details of opening hours are clearly displayed in the shop windows.
An easily accessed parking area to the rear of the premises is used for deliveries, which are received through a door, well protected by an insect screen. The owners state that fish and chips account for at least 80% of the business turnover. |

Regional Winner - Central & South England
Saxon Traditional Fish & Chips, Biggleswade, Hertfordshire forms part of a modern brick built shopping complex and possesses ample car parking provision to the front of the premises. The complex is situated in an area of new residential housing. Adjacent retail units in the complex comprise a small supermarket, a newsagent, a hairdresser, a Chinese meal take-away shop, and a childcare nursery school.
The shop possesses a red brickwork exterior and glass frontage with a single glass entrance door. There is clear and smart signage.The outside of the shop is well served with litter bins. The shop is clean and well presented. |
Regional Winner - Northern Ireland
The Pit Stop, Kilkeel is a take-away and sit-in shop located on the main road through the small town of Kilkeel in County Down. The shop is owned and run by Alan Hanna.
It has a bright glass and blue/yellow colour scheme exterior with prominent signage. Excellent additional signage has been installed proclaiming the shop as the regional Competition winner for Northern Ireland in 2005. The Seafish Friers Quality Award roundel is prominently displayed in the front window.
The shop is located on two levels; on the ground floor to the front is the customer area and to the rear is the frying area along with some storage and preparation areas to the rear. On the first floor is further preparation area. A single glass door leads into the main reception area of the shop. |

Regional Winner - North East England
Beedles Chippy, Bishop Auckland is an established small take-away shop located in Bishop Auckland in County Durham. The shop is one of small number of shops owned by Peter Beedle. It is located on the corner of a street of traditional terraced residential houses.
The shop possesses a bright windowed and tiled frontage, with a single entrance door: the overall external colour scheme is blue and white. Shop signage is clear and the and the Seafish Friers Quality Award roundel is prominently displayed. Further signage proclaims the shop as a Regional winner in the Competition.
Opening hours are clearly displayed on the exterior of the shop and the menu board can also be seen from outside by looking through the window. The owners state that fish and chips account for between 75 and 80% of the business turnover. |
