Fry Magazine reveals its Best Fish & Chip Shops 2018!

Article Date: 2018-03-02

Fry Magazine has revealed its Top 50 Fish and Chip Takeaways and its Top 10 Fish and Chip Restaurants for 2018 following months of mystery dining.

The competition, which is now in its sixth year, saw over 600 shops vying for a place on the list following an unannounced mystery dining visit to each takeaway and restaurant. Over 40 aspects of the business are carefully scrutinised from the quality of fish and chips and staff presentation to front-of-house hygiene and customer service.

Shops that communicate the provenance of their products, for example where they source their fish and potatoes, could scoop extra points as could those with a social media presence, who offer disabled access and those with card payment facilities.

All the while, the food is the main focus with all outlets assessed on the flakiness of the fish, the crispness of the chips and the crunch of the batter, alongside value for money.

The pass rate was once again set very high this year with 96% required to secure a place, although an impressive five outlets scored a perfect 100%.

Reece Head, competition organiser, comments: "Once again we’ve got a fantastic list of fish and chip shops spanning the breadth of the UK who put their all into their business, their staff and their food.

"With margins getting tighter for fish and chip shop owners and more competition than ever before, it’s a tough business to be in these days, but these shops are going out there, investing in their business, motivating their staff, staying up-to-date with the latest food trends and embracing technology. But more importantly, they are giving their customers what they want - top quality food and great customer service in attractive, inviting surroundings. And that’s the key to a successful business and a successful future for fish and chips.

"Our mystery diners are the toughest customers of all to please so we’re delighted to say these shops all made the grade and we welcome them to our list of Top 50 Fish & Chip Takeaways and Top 10 Fish & Chips Restaurants.”
