Eight More Medals for Unstoppable Athletics Star Declan

Article Date: 2017-08-10

Swimmer and track and field athlete Declan Bennett from Woodhall Spa has brought home an abundance of medals after triumphing at this year’s British Transplant Games.

On the back of his eight-medal success at The World Transplant Games last month, Declan Bennett (18) is celebrating once again after winning another eight medals.

Declan, who is supported by The Elite Fish and Chip Company, recently took part in the British Transplant Games in North Lanarkshire, Scotland, where he added five golds, two silvers and a bronze medal to his already impressive track record.

Rachel Tweedale, from The Elite Fish and Chip Company, said: "We are very proud to have sponsored and supported Declan in his sporting career over the years. It’s been fantastic watching him grow into such an inspirational competitor.”

At the age of seven, it was discovered that Declan had chronic renal failure – a condition that meant he needed a kidney transplant. Declan received a living donor kidney transplant from his father Guy in 2009. The donated kidney enabled Declan to work towards a healthy lifestyle and return to the many sporting activities that he enjoyed prior to surgery.

Rachel added: "We hope that Declan’s success will inspire more people to join the NHS Organ Donation Register to help people like Declan achieve their dreams.”

This is the first time that Declan has entered the British Transplant Games in a more competitive age category, competing with athletes up to the age of 29.

Declan said: "I can’t quite believe that I have won another eight medals since the World Transplant Games! This was the first time I had competed in the adult category at the British Transplant Games which were more challenging for me.

"Although it was unfamiliar territory, I had a wonderful time and it was really nice to be on home turf again.”

"I want to thank the Elite for their continued support – without their donations over the years none of this would be possible. Thanks to them I can keep training and doing what I love!”

Declan’s team, Nottingham Adults, finished with a total of 37 medals at the games, including two trophies, one for volleyball and one for the swimming relay.

Following a busy year Declan has now got his sights set on a relaxing family holiday after which he will return to training.
