Mad Hatters take over Wetherby Whaler to raise money for charity

Customers visiting the Wetherby Whaler were in for a surprise when they encountered the staff wearing silly hats to raise money for The Fishermen’s Mission.

The staff at the fish and chip chain, calling themselves the Mad Hatters, raised £1,000 for the national charity, which provides round-the clock support and care for both active and retired fishermen and their families.

On National Fish and Chip Day, customers were greeted by staff wearing an array of interesting headgear, including sharks, top hats, and a green chicken. The team raised money through sponsorship and donations on the day.

Phillip Murphy, Director at the Wetherby Whaler, said: "Raising £1,000 is an incredible achievement for a day’s fundraising. We are delighted that the staff and customers at all our restaurants got into the spirit of the day, and gave so generously.

"The event was important to us, as it brought our five restaurants together to celebrate the nation’s favourite dish, and allowed us to support a brilliant charity. It was also a great excuse to see some amazing hats!”

Ali Godfrey, Director of Business Development at The Fishermen’s Mission, said: "Fundraising like this is essential for charities like The Fishermen’s Mission, to carry on doing the important work we do for fishermen and their families. We would like thank the Wetherby Whaler for supporting us in such a novel way. I’m sure the customers enjoyed their fish and chips even more than usual.”
