Norwegian fishing captain visits Wetherby Whaler to sample his own catch
The Wetherby Whaler invited the Norwegian fisherman who catches its award-winning haddock to sample the fish and chips it is renowned for.
Lars Nyvoll, captain of the 40metre-long line-fishing vessel Nyvoll Senior, visited the Wetherby Whaler in Guiseley to see for himself where some of the more than 100tonnes of fish his ship catches each trip ends up.
Lars was shown how the fish is prepared and cooked by the Wetherby Whalerís experienced fryers. Afterwards, he was joined by his son Lars Jnr, BjÝrn Eikrem of Ňlesund Seafood, David Latus of G W Latus fish wholesaler, and the founder of the Wetherby Whaler, Phillip Murphy, for a meal of traditional Yorkshire fish and chips.
The Wetherby Whaler group includes five high quality fish and chip restaurants, in Guiseley, Wetherby, Wakefield, York and Pudsey. Phillip and Janine Murphy began trading in fish and chips in 1969 in Tadcaster, 20 years before buying the original Wetherby Whaler in Wetherby.
Phillip Murphy, Director of Wetherby Whaler, said: "Lars and his crew do provide absolutely top quality fish. Itís great to be able to meet the person who is at the beginning of the supply chain. Itís also good for them to see where their fish goes and how we use it at the Wetherby Whaler.
"I hope he enjoys our traditional Yorkshire offering - especially as itís his fish which are so loved by our customers!
"We only use the best haddock for our fish and chips, which Lars and his crew deliver time and time again. All of their fish is MSC accredited, meaning that it is fished in a sustainable way, which is something very important to us and our customers.
"I hope Lars has an excellent time during his visit to England and we are hoping to welcome him back to the Wetherby Whaler in the future.Ē
Lars Nyvoll said: "Itís great to see the restaurant and the final destination of the fish we have been catching this winter in the Bering Sea. I think itís very important.
"Iím looking forward to telling my boys that I got to watch people eating our fish in a restaurant. Itís what we have to think about when producing and handling the fish.
Lars added: "Norwegian-caught fish, as prepared by the Wetherby Whaler are the best fish and chips in my opinion.Ē
