Elite Sponsorship Boost for GB Star Bennett

Article Date: 2016-02-09

Lincolnshire track and swim star Declan Bennett has received a sponsorship boost ahead of this summer’s European Transplant and Dialysis Sport Championship in Finland.

The Elite Fish and Chip Company is continuing its sponsorship of Declan and presented the Woodhall Spa teenager with a cheque for £1,500 this week.

Declan, 16, is preparing to represent Great Britain at the ninth European Transplant and Dialysis Sport Championship in Vantaa, Finland from 10th to 17th July.

At the age of seven, it was discovered that Declan had chronic renal failure – a condition that meant he needed a kidney transplant. Declan received a living donor kidney transplant from his father, Guy in 2009. The donated kidney enabled Declan to work towards a healthy lifestyle and return to the many sporting activities that he enjoyed prior to surgery.

Declan, who attends Queen Elizabeth’s Grammar School in Horncastle, won a sensational seven gold medals at the 20th World Transplant Games in Argentina in August 2015. Named the Outstanding Junior Male of the tournament, Declan claimed five tournament records.

Rachel Tweedale, from The Elite Fish and Chip Company, said: "We’re proud to sponsor Declan and we hope that his success will inspire people to register for organ donation.

"Please go to www.organdonation.nhs.ukto find out more about organ donation. Waiting for an organ can take years but registering as an organ donor takes just two minutes.”

Guy Bennett said: "Transplantation is a treatment and not a cure. At some point in the future, Declan will need another transplant or maybe several more – this may come from a relative, an altruistic donor or from a donor who has died.”
